Abstract
14,057. Keith, J. June 9. Gas distribution, increasing pressure locally in.- A bell pump is employed and is actuated by a direct-acting water-pressure engine C. The pump is double-acting; the bell works in the space a between the two cylinders A, A'. The apparatus is filled with the exhaust water from the motor up to the level of the top of the pipe F, which is behind the pipe D and carries off the overflow to the gas holder L'. The air enters and leaves by pipes D, G and through suitable flap valves ; it is forced beneath the weighted bell L of the gas holder. In the motor the water supply pipe 0, Fig. 4, is in constant communication with the bottom of the cylinder, tending to force the piston upwards ; during the up-stroke the upper end of the cylinder is open to the exhaust through the port q and pipe c. At the top of the stroke the piston lifts the pilot valve R and places the space above the valve Q, which has hitherto been open to pressure through ports r', r and pipes S<2>, S, in communication with the exhaust through the ports r<1>, r<2> and pipes S<2>, S'. The pressure beneath the valve Q is thus permitted to raise it, and allow pressure fluid to pass through the port q to the space above the piston P and depress the latter. The movement of the gas holder controls the power water supply to the motor by means of the lever U and valve V.
