Abstract
12,458. W³lfing, P. May 20. Belt gearing; ratchet gearing.-Relates to driving- mechanism for velocipedes. A ratchet-wheel S is fixed to the axle a of the driving-wheel, and is engaged by a pawl A pinned to a drum D which can turn freely on the axle a. A cord or belt B is fixed to a point on the drum D and also to a pulley E, which is mounted eccentrically on a rocking shaft driven by a treadle-lever h. The return of the treadle is effected by any suitable arrangement applied to the drum D. The ratchet is kept silent when not in gear by the action of a piece G which rides upon the ratchet-wheel S, and when the latter moves forward independently is carried a small distance by the friction and lifts the pawls A by pressing against a short arm C upon it. The relative positions of the eccentric E and the treadle-lever h may be changed by means of a bar s sliding in guides on the frame, and having projecting studs s<1>, s<2>. When the treadle is at the bottom of its stroke, the bar s may be pressed down so that the stud s' engages with the projection n<1>, and pushes the eccentric E further on, causing the spring catch g to slide out of the notch i', and to fall into the notch i<1>. The former position may be regained by making the stud s' engage a cam g<1> on the catch g.
