Abstract

9436. Thompson, W. P., [Dorchester, E. G.]. April 13. Odometers; speed indicators.-The instrument is an odometer d r i v e n by projections on the wheel engaging a star-wheel I, but instead of the dial being marked for distance it is marked as a clock, Fig. 8, and, the rider having determined upon a a certain rate of speed and adjusted the i n s t r u m e n t accordingly, that speed is maintained so long as the time shown by the odometer agrees with that of the rider's watch. The adjustment for various speeds is effected in the following manner:-The driving-shaft i is wormgeared to a long pinion d with which gears a pinion e adapted also to mesh with one or other of a series of toothed wheels D. The pinion e is carried by a spring arm e<1> pivoted on a plate,f which is guided to slide parallel to the axis of D without turning. This movement is effected by rotating the cylindrical part A of the casing which has a helical groove a<1> inside it engaging projections f<1> on the plate f. During adjustment the wheel e must be out of gear, and for this purpose a notched shaft g is turned so that it throws back the arm e'. At the same time it frees a latch which normally locks the cylindrical casing A to its fixed ends. The casing is graduated to facilitate the adjustment. The shaft a of the wheels D carries the "minute" hand b, Fig. 8, and is geared with a wheel o<2> on which the hour-hand p is marked. Fig. 12 shows a band which is secured to the spokes of the wheel and which has folding spurs j, j<1> which may be locked in either position by turn-buttons k, k<1>. These spurs are for actuating the star-wheel I, and by employing one only or both the range of the instrument is doubled.
