Abstract

9204. Genereux, F. H., Roberts, R., Joncas, L., Mignault, A., and Brousseau, S. April 10. Folding umbrellas.-An umbrella is made to fold, to enable it to be packed in a valise, by jointing the ribs and stick. The two portions a, a<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, of the stick are hinged to a link and are kept in line by a sliding sleeve, which allows them to be folded when required. The ferrule or tip a<3> is screwed into the end,.and is attached to a sliding block e by a chain e<1>, allowing it to be unscrewed and folded down. The handle g is made to telescope over the stick and catch i, and is held in either position by a spring catch h engaging in apertures in the stick. The outer portions d<1>, Fig. 8, of the ribs are bent to a U-shape at their inner ends, each rib having a fixed block l and a sliding block k, with a spring m between them. The inner portion of each rib is pivoted to one of the blocks j, and has a hook j<1> engaging a pin o on the sliding block to hold the rib in an extended position. The stretchers p are pivoted to the sliding blocks. The umbrella may be held in the closed position with the ribs extended, or by suitable manipulation the various parts may be folded with the two portions of the ribs and the stretchers adjacent to one another, and the handle end of the stick folded over with them.
