Abstract

8161. Weiss, G. March 30. Tapping.-Machines for tapping nuts are provided with a number of tap-carrying spindles B, arranged in a circle, and driven alternately in opposite directions at different speeds by the bevel pinion C' and the compound wheel C<2> gearing with pinions b on the various spindles B from a shaft C, with fast and loose belt pulleys c, c' and c<2>, c<3>. The nut blanks are placed in a hopper E, divided i n t o compartments b y radial partitions, and rotated intermittently by a pawl engaging the r a t c h e t - wheel e<2> to bring each compartment over an opening at e<1> in the stationary bottom plate E'. The blanks drop on a rapidly-rotating plate F, and are thrown against the outer wall f<2>, catches or projections on which guide the blanks into the shoots F<1> situated above each spindle. The lowest blanks are pushed between a spring finger and a support above each spindle by slides G operated by a special cam H, oscillated alternately in opposite directions by an arm on a shaft D<1> striking stops on a rod, a roller on which engages a slot in a plate secured to the cam. This sliding rod also carries stops or projections which strike an arm and oscillate the shaft which actuates the pawl and ratchet mechanism at e<2>. The shaft D<1> is alternately rotated in opposite directions by worm gearing d<2>, d<3> from the shaft C, and the worm -wheel d<3> carries stops d<4>, d<5> for operating the belt-shifting mechanism D, d, d' for reversing the direction of rotation of the shaft C and spindles B. The spindles B are fed up for traversing by a screwed sleeve B<2> on each spindle working in part nuts b<2> supported in brackets B<1>. The nuts b<2> may be attached to blocks b<1> by pins which will shear if the tap meets an obstruction. The nuts b<2> may be held in place by springs b<6>, bevelled pieces b<5> and catches b<4> entering recesses in the nuts, which are forced downwards when the tap meets an obstruction. The spindles drop on to studs b<8>, and when the spindles are reversed the part nuts are forced back into place. The slides G are also constructed in two parts connected by a spring catch g<4>, which yields if the feed of the blanks is obstructed. The tapped nuts are pushed aside by the succeeding blanks and fall into a receptacle A<2> with perforated partitions for separating the nuts, chips, and oil. The oil is collected in chambers a<10> and circulated by a pump L through a pipe l<1> to the taps and blanks.
