The air rising through the inner tube a is divided into two currents by the tube d, the velocity of both being preserved by means of the contractorring h. The inner current is directed against the flame by the spreader f<1>, part of it passing, in some cases, through the holes o against the plate p, whereby a pear-shaped flame is produced. Air entering through the radial tubes m produces an eddying motion, to cause the intimate mixture necessary for the formation of the blue flame. In order to adjust the proportion of gas and air to the internal volume of the incandescent mantle, the latter may be raised or lowered by means of the rack s and pinion s'. An increased supply of oil is effected by the capillary tubes t, or by webbings between the wink-tube and wick. Several modifications of spreader are described which are supported on the tube d instead of by a rod. In these cases, the inner current passes through perforations in the tube.
