Abstract

4184. Goold Bicycle Co. and Wilson, W. S. Feb. 16. Ball bearings for bicycles are arranged to allow the spindle and cones to be removed with the balls retained in place on them, and also have devices for excluding dust and for preventing the cones from being put out of alignment when the forks &c. are tightened up. Fig. 2 shows the application to a bottom bracket. The cones B are sleeved or screwed on the spindle A, and are shouldered on a sleeve D to prevent their being tilted when tightened up. Flanged collars a on the sleeve retain the balls in position when the spindle is removed by screwing out one of the cups G. Dust is excluded by making the cups embrace the spindle as closely as possible and cutting threads on the rotating part (in this case on the spindle), the worm action of which when rotating prevents dust from entering the bearing. In this form, the lefthand crank may be forced off the spindle, after removing the screw M, by screwing out the cup G.
