Abstract

3430. Lake, H. H., [Tillinghast, P. W.]. Feb. 9. Saddles.-Relates to saddles having as foundation a number of strands of leather radiating from the pommel to the cantle. The strands are made by slitting up a strip of leather from each end, and leaving an uncut portion in the middle, which is looped through a ring i at the pommel, the divided ends d being attached to the cantle, as in Fig. 1, which is an under view of the saddle. The strands that are attached to the sides of the cantle are collected at a point some distance from the front of the pommel by a ring j or by other means, in order to keep the pommel narrow. Fig. 2 shows a section along w, w, Fig. 1. The leather strands d, d may be tightened by pushing forward the ring i by turning the screw h in the piece g attached to the supporting rods f. A washer protects the leather from abrasion. The saddle is provided with a cover a having cushions b, preferably thicker in front than at the back. The cover is attached to the pommel by a pocket c, which is made so as to permit the tightening of the leather strands, and to the cantle e, either by lacing the inner lining, as in Fig. 12, or by straps, as in Fig. 14, or by cement, -as in Fig. 17. The cantle is made with a depression in the middle. A clamp for fixing the saddle in position is shown in Figs. 19, 20, and 21; the piece p may be stamped out of sheet steel.
