Abstract
3025. Maxim, H. Feb. 4. Cooling overheated parts; pistons; piston-rods.-The invention is more especially applicable to double-acting gas engines The piston-rods 2, 8 are hollow, and work into chambers 4 and 10. The chamber 4 is connected to the water tank 7, and a pipe 13 leads from the tank to the cylinder jacket 12, which is in communication with the chamber 10. The motion of the piston tends to move the water firat in one direction and then in the other, but if a valve 14 is interposed at a suitable point, the water is compelled to circulate. To increase the action of the piston on the water, and to distribute the water against the walls of the piston, a plate 16 is fixed in the central recess having holes 17 near the outside edge. It is stated that the invention may be applied to steam engines and other vapour engines for cooling pistons and piston-rods. The cylinder jacket 12 may be dispensed with, and the chamber 10 directly connected by a straight pipe with the tank 7. The slide valve or other valve and its spindle may be cooled in like manner.
