Abstract

2378. Rowbotham, W. Jan. 29. Primary batteries.-Relates to a carbon-iron cell in which a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids, or nitrates, is used as the depolarizer. Fig. 5 shows the cell in vertical, and Fig. 7 in horizontal, section. A large number of tubes d of porous material connect the partitions P, P<1> and open at one end into the sealed chamber E. Carbon rods G are contained in these tubes, the left-hand ends in Fig. 5 being connected together and to the terminal C' by metal strips embedded in cement. The iron plates B are arranged between successive vertical series of porous tubes. Water is circulated through the chambers A of successive cells, and the depolarizing-liquid through the chambers E, the liquids ent, ring at A<2> and E<2> and passing beneath diaphragms A<3>, E3 into the chambers. The cells are arranged in steps, the water and depolarizer flowing from one to the next through air gaps. The pressure of the nitrous fumes generated at the carbon rods forces the exciting liquid through the porous tubes into the chambers A in proportion to the amount of gas generated.
