Abstract
The electrodes are arranged vertically with diaphragms between adjacent anodes and cathodes defining respective anodic and cathodic compartments. Each electrode is made up of two thin plates forming between them a thin flat chamber which is part of a cooling circuit of electrically insulating coolant removing from the electrolyser some of the heat dissipated in the electrolyte during operation of the electrolyser. The coolant is pref. paraffin, the electrolyser being under an atmosphere of an inert gas such as nitrogen to remove risk of combustion when operating at elevated temps. The electrolyser can be immersed in a tank of the coolant, which then circulates through the thin chambers by thermo-siphoning, and the whole assembly can be within a pressure vessel, e.g. of concrete, permitting operation at elevated pressure of several ens of bars. To ensure good sealing between cells PTFE joints can be used and the edges of the diaphragms can also be impregnated with some material. The electrolyser is used in the prodn. of gases, esp. H2, at elevated pressures such as those at which the gases are required to be used. The electrolyser requires a much smaller flow rate of electrolyte across each cell for a given gas prodn. rate than with conventional appts. because excess heat is removed by the coolant and a high flow rate of electrolyte is therefore not required to do the job. Degassing of the electrolyte is easier because the gas is transported by a smaller vol. of electrolyte.
