Abstract

189,274. Trier, F. N., (Kloetzli, T.). Sept. 13, 1921. Twist drills, sharpening.-Comprises a device for sharpening twist drills wherein the usual V-groove in which the drill is supported is of such a cross-section that drills of different diameters, on being placed in the groove, automatically take up the correct position for sharpening. The drill support E has a shank A adapted to be oscillated, during sharpening, in a socket B, which is adjustably secured to the base of the grinding-machine, the axis XW of the shank being inclined to the face of the grinding-wheel K to give the correct angle to the cutting-edges of the drill. The support E is of V-section with the sides XY, XZ inclined, as shown in Fig. 3, at such angles to the vertical plane containing the axis XW that that plane divides the base YZ of the triangle XYZ into parts approximately in the proportion of 2 to 1. By the use of a groove of this section the distance or offset of the centre of a drill from the axis XW varies according to the diameter of the drill. A lip rest D, which may be adjustable lengthways of the holder to vary the clearance on the drill point, is secured to the support, and a stop H for the end of the drill is adjustably mounted on the support. In a modification, the position of the V-groove is reversed relatively to the axis of oscillation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2704/00 and 9930/00.
