Abstract

187,905. Harper, G. Feb. 17, 1922. Soldering-irons. - A soldering-iron, particularly for soldering the vent holes in tins containing food and the like, comprises a shank having a helical key connection with the hand-grip so that, on pressing the hand-grip downwards, the bit is rotated so as to tin the rim of the hole and solder the aperture without heating the adjoining parts, and thus preventing the solder from being blown out of place before it chills. The stem B<2> of the bit is secured by a clamp A<2> to a tubular shank A, having a helical groove C in which engages a key such as a ball C<2> housed in a recess D' in a metal liner D<2> secured to the hand'-grip D. The ball is acted on by a spring A<4>, abutting against cups D<6>, A<5>, the cup A<5> being supported by a plug A<3> closing the end of the shank. If the bit is to be heated electrically, the plug A<3> may be replaced by a hollow plug having a tubular extension, Fig 4, to receive the supply cables E and a cup D<8> is used in place of the cup D<6>.
