Filaments; residual gases.-A lamp of the inert gas-filled type is given a content of phosphorus or phosphorus compound exceeding 0.1 per cent of the weight of the incandescent body and contains gas at a pressure of less than 0.1 of an atmosphere. The phosphorus may be introduced as a coating on the filament or by making the filament of a tungsten alloy high in phosphorus. It may also be replaced wholly or in part by other elements of the phosphorus group, such as sulphur, antimony, arsenic, selenium, or tellurium, or by compounds of these, such as antimony or arsenic sulphide. In one method of making the lamp, the frame is made hollow and is filled with phosphorus. The lamp is heated on the pump in an air bath at 400‹ C. and the filament raised to incandescence. The phosphorus is allowed to vaporize for some time and after the current has been cut off and the lamp cooled, less than 0.1 atmosphere of inert gas is introduced. During the evacuation, the lamp may be cleansed by introducing and drawing off hydrogen. Lamps so heated have a reduced blackening, and when filled with pure argon are less liable to discharge through their gas content.
