Abstract

185,527. Swift, G. W. June 13, 1921. Pleating.-Box blanks formed from a composite multi-ply paper material, Fig. 6, are reinforced along the folding lines 9 by forming integral longitudinal pleats or folds in one or more of the webs during the process of manufacture. The pleats 85a are formed in parallel spaced relationship and may be in one or both of the surface webs 85. The surface web or webs are pleated by means added to the mechanism for forming the composite material, the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2 being constructed in accordance with Specification 153,556 for forming double-faced cellular paper board. The surface web 85 from the supply roll passes into peripheral contact with glueing rollers 100 and over a stationary cylinder 110 having deep fold-forming grooves 111 with wide leading-in throats 112 by which and folder blades 115 the web is forced gradually into the grooves to form downwardly presented folds 85a, Fig. 4, the plies of which are glued together by the glue applied by the rollers 100. The web then passes over glueing rollers 120 to blades or bars 125 which gradually turn the downward folds inwardly, Fig. 5, to cause them to adhere to the lines of glue applied by the rollers 120, the folds being permanently secured by rollers 130, 131 before passing to the surface-web applying roller 21.
