Abstract
185,425. Adams, E. M., (Assignee of Quam, J. P.). Sept. 2, 1921, [Convention date]. Density separators.-An air-cleaning device of the kind described in Specification 169,723, particularly for use with internal-combustion engines, has a casing 1 with an inlet 5 at one end and concentric outlets 2, 6 at the other end. An extension of the outlet 2 passes inside the casing to the open end-piece 8 and carries a conical partition 9 which restricts the outlet 6 to a narrow annular opening. A spindle 13 is secured to a spider 20 in the extended conduit 2 and supports a rotor 3 having a conical member 11 provided with vanes 12. A propeller 4 is attached to the rotor. The passage of air due to the suction on the conduit 2 causes the propeller 4 to rotate the rotor 3. The air then entering the inlet 5 passes between the conical member 11 and the casing 1. its velocity increasing in the narrower part of the space. The particles of dirt &c. are thrown outwards by centrifugal force and pass down the casing into the atmosphere through the outlet 6 The clean air is drawn into the open end 8 of the conduit 2 and out through the conduit by the suction of the engine.
