Abstract

185,401. Venditti, G. Aug. 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Hand-sewing tools; marking work for sewing. -A free-loop stitching hand-sewing tool is moved by hand to follow a predetermined outline for the purpose of tacking together two pieces of material, so that by slightly separating the pieces, the threads between them may be cut, thus leaving identical patterns marked on each piece. A handler b integral with the frame a has pivoted thereto at b<1> two levers b<2>, b<4>. The sector c meshes with a toothed wheel c<2>, whieh is loose upon a fly-wheel shaft d and is integral with a ratchet c<3>. A spring-pressed pawl c<5>, pivoted to a plate c<4> which is fixed to the shaft d, engages the ratchet c<3>, A pawl e<1>, Fig. 1, pivoted to a disc e which is keyed to the shaft d engages a notch f' in a disc f. The disc f is loosely mounted on the shaft and actuates by means of a pin-and-slot connection the needlearm g, which is pivoted on a pin g<2>. A spring- pressed lever g<4>, Fig. 2, mounted on the pin g<2> tends to keep the needle out of the material.. The handles b, b<2> are operated to transmit a continuous rotary motion to the fly-wheel shaft d, thus reciprocating the needle h. The machine rests on milled wheels i on a shaft i<1> to which is also fixed a notched diso i<2>. A pawl j, which co-operates with the disc i<2>, is fixed to a pin j<2>, integral with levers j<3>, j<4>, Fig. 1. The pawl engages a notch i<3> on the disc i<2> during stitch forming to hold the tool stationary. As the needle leaves the material, a cam projection e<3> on the disc e forces downward the lever j<3> so as to disengage the pawl f from the disc i<2>, so that the machine can move forwards until the pawl j engages the next notch i<3>. When the lever j<3> is forced downwards, the lever j' is brought into the path of the tail of the pawl e<1> which is raised thereby from engagement with the disc f. Reciprocation of the needle is therefore stopped until the pawl j engages in the next notch i<3>. The needle h, Fig. 4, is grooved at p<1>, p<2> on either side of the eye p so as to reduce the friction between the needle and the thread.
