Abstract
185,394. Weiss, P. B. Aug. 29, 1921, [Convention date]. Pneumatic collectors. - A machine for collecting, by scraping and suction, boll weevils from cotton plants comprises a frame 1 supported on wheels 2, 49 and carrying an engine 7 which drives a centrifugal fan 9. The suction pipe 15 is connected to a transverse pipe 16 having vertical sections 17 which are in the same planes as the wheels 2. The lower ends of the sections 17 are open at 23 and are connected, by means of flexible connections 19, to flanges 20 on groundengaging runners 21. These runners, attached to rods 26 sliding in brackets 33 and kept in engagement with the ground by springs 32, are raised from the ground by rods 31 and levers 30 keyed to a rocking shaft 29, while chains 48 ensure that forwardly extending and diverging ground-engaging fingers 36 and chains 39 carried by the runners are also raised from the ground. The machine straddles a row of cotton plants so that they are vibrated by weighted ropes 5 and the fingers 36 and chains 39 then scrape the boll weevils, which have been dislodged from the plants, to a point centrally of the path of the runner 21 so that the boll weevils are drawn through the fan 9 into the discharge pipes 41, and projected with force against the inner walls of the vertical portions 42 of the discharge pipes leading to the containers 44.
