Abstract
184,207. British Electric Transformer Co., Ltd., and Roothaan, J. Feb. 12, 1921. Transformers.-A transformer comprises adjacent sets a, b of convolutions of bare conductor spaced apart by radial separators c, the convolu. tions in each set being separated by interposed distances-pieces d and held together by radial binders e. The separators, distance-pieces and binders are formed of homogeneous insulating- material, and are arranged at intervals around the convolutions in such a manner that the convolutions are mainly insulated by air, previous to the immersion of the winding in oil. The coil is wound with the aid of a former comprising rings g, g<1>, Fig. 2. which are provided with recesses on their peripheries to hold the radial separators in position. The rings carry lateral guide-bars i and are clamped together by set-screws h. The distance-pieces d, which may be provided with notches engaging the separators c and binders c, are inserted in position as the winding proceeds. In a modification, the distance-pieces are provided on one side with 4 dovetail notches through which pass the radial separators, which are of corresponding shape in cross-section. When strip conductors are employed the ends a<1>, b<1>, of the strips may be joined together by means of a short strip of copper f. Fig. 7<a>, which is formed with an expansion bend f<1> and riveted to the ends of the strips. The edges of the conductors, separators, distance-pieces, and binders may be curved to conform to the lines of force of the electrostatic field set an when the coil is in use. When round conductors are used, the distance-pieces d may have rounded inner and outer edges, with intermediate concave recesses to receive the conductors, as shown in Fig. 16. The separators c are displaced angularly with reference to the distance-pieces, and are formed on opposite sides with recesses c<2> to receive the convolutions of the adjacent coils a, b. The binders (not shown) may be similarly recessed to receive the convolutions.
