Abstract

Variable - speed gearing comprises a swash ring 11, Fig. 1, of variable inclination operating through friction ratchets 19 and a toothed reversing-gear 17, Fig. 2. An annular revoluble casing 3 is pivoted upon a trunnion 4 upon a driving-shaft 1 and carries in ball bear. ings the non-revoluble ring 11. A sleeve 6 slides on a feather on the shaft 1 and has a wedge surface 7 bearing on a cam-face 5 of the casing 3, and serves to tilt the casing. A spring plunger 9 gives the casing 3 the initial push from its normal or no-drive position as the sleeve 6 is withdrawn. The swash mechanism is enclosed in an oil-bath A. Rods 13 with ball ends 12 communicate oscillations to the ratchets 19 which drive a sleeve 14<1> continuously in one direction. A double clutch 18 transmits this or reversed rotation to a driven shaft 14. The rods 13 are in a conical cluster, and their driven ends are in line with the shaft 1.
