Abstract
182,740. Vogt, H. C., Boby, W. V., Lancaster, S. D., and Kroyer, S. Feb. 11, 1922. Screw motors; regulating.-A windmill with flexible sails is provided with means for adjusting the position of the sails round their masts, the position of the rotary mill tower relative to the direction of the wind being adjusted automatically without the use of tail vanes. The sails 10 are carried on four masts 1, and are stretched by rigid sprits 12 and two or three horizontal flexible spars 13. Guy ropes 17 secure the masts relativelv to each other, and secure them in sockets 2, Fig. 3, in a sleeve 3 mounted in bearings 4, 5, 6, Fig. 1, carried on a platform 7, which is rotatable on a ball-race 8. The sails are simultaneously tightened or slackened by tackle comprising cables 31, 27, springs 33, 29 and pulleys 32, 30 connected to a screwed nut 18 mounted on a screw 19 within the sleeve 3, Fig. 3. The screw is connected by a square end to a sprocket wheel 22, on which a chain 23 runs to a hand-wheel 24. Normally the sleeve 3, nut 18, screw 19 and sprocket wheels 22, 24 rotate together as the windmill is working, but if it is desired to tighten the sails, the hand-wheel 24 is temporarily held to stop the sprocket wheel 22 and the screw 19. The sleeve 3 and nut 18 in engagement therewith continue rotation, and the nut 18 moves along the screw 19 to the right, so tightening the sails through the cable and pulley tackle. To slacken the sails the handwheel 24 is rotated faster in its normal direction. The screw 19, nut 18 and sprocket wheels 22, 24 may be dispensed with, and may be replaced by a block sliding in the sleeve 3. The cable and pulley sail-tightening tackle are then connected to the block, which is also connected by a cable passing through the sleeve 3 to a pivoted weighted quadrant to obtain uniform tension on the sails. Toothed wheel and belt and pulley multiplying-gearing may be provided for driving a dynamo from the sleeve 3.
