Abstract
182,540. Percival, S., (Hansa Metall-Werke Ges.). March 31, 1921. Clinometers.-In a clinometer for aircraft &c. provided with an unstable pendulum to counteract acceleration influences on the main pendulum, a main stable pendulum, cardanically suspended, is made hollow to enclose the unstable pendulum, the pivot of the latter being close to the centre of gravity of the main pendulum, and its axis coinciding in normal position with that of the main pendulum. In one construction, Fig. 2, the hollow main pendulum a is suspended by cardan rings g, h from a bracket f on the craft, and the unstable pendulum b, c is connected thereto by a ball joint d. The hollow member a is extended upward to form a hemispherical portion carrying a scale which moves in relation to a fixed pointer l carried by the bracket f. The pendulum b, c is controlled by a spring m connecting the upper end of its spindle b to a lug on the portion k, and its centre of gravity is adjusted by a nut i. Fig. 4 shows a construction in which the shape of the pendulum a is modified, and the pendulum b, c is controlled by radial springs m. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which the pendulum b, c is formed with a part spherical base p adapted to rock on a larger partspherical member q attached to the pendulum a. The pendulum b, c is centralized on returning to normal position by a pin r with a cycloidal flank engaging a hole in the member q.
