Abstract

181,757. Walter, A. J., and Kruesheld, H. Jan. 17, 1921. Heating-appliances.-A self-contained hand appliance for heating the urethra in the treatment of disease comprises an electric heating element mounted within a cannula for insertion in the organ, and a variable resistance for regulating the temperature attained. The instrument comprises a divided casing 1 connected to a tube or cannula 33 within which is mounted an electric heater 37 of known type in circuit with a resistance coil 6 carried in a frame 4 within the casing 1. A contact 11 having a curved surface to engage the resistance 6 is mounted as a nut on a screw shaft 7 adapted to be rotated by means of a knurled head 8 projecting through a slot 9 in the casing. The contact 11 is formed with an arm 13 connected to the main electric lead 18 and with an arm 14 carrying a pointer 31. A clinical thermometer 29 lying in a recess in the casing projects into an L.shaped tube 28 connected with the cannula 33. The cannula 33 and a reduced portion 32 of the casing are provided with studs 34 to engage bayonet slots in interchangeable cannulas of varying size which may be employed to surround the tube 33.
