Abstract

181,322. Williams, F. P. Habicht-, (known as Habicht, F. P.). June 1, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by air jets.-In ships propelled by air jets, a compressor forces air beneath the hull into a perforated pipe or channels formed by keels. the bottom of the hull sloping upwardly and rearwardly from the position at which the air conduit passes through the hull. Steering is effected by controlling the port and starboard jets. The air to the channels is controlled by a valve in the compressor suction or delivery pipes,. or by valves in the branch delivery conduits in accordance with the varying water pressure in the outboard passages. The boat k, Fig. 1, has a compressor e delivering to a perforated pipe h. In the modification, Fig. 4, the compressor delivers to a forward or rear channel d<1>, d formed between depending keel members c, the depth of the keels increasing from the compressor position forwardly and aft respectively. Instead of one channel between two keels, there may be a number of longitudinal channels between a number of keels, steering being effected by controlling the air jets. When the ship is out of trim the water pressure in the channels is unequal, and when there is a separate compressor to each channel the air delivery is regulated by a piston r, Fig. 8,. under the influence of the pressure in the delivery pipe p, acting on a throttle valve t in the compressor suction pipe m. Where one compressor feeds several channels, each branch is controlled by a valve 11, Fig. 9, moving over a port 14 in the pipe line 5, 6.
