Abstract

181,006. Gaston, E. L. June 3, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Cells.-Zinc cups for dry batteries are made by deposition on mandrels d, Fig. 7, of aluminium or other metal separated by a flanged reel d<2> of wood porcelain or other insulator engaging links of an endless band by which the mandrels are drawn through the bath. The mandrels roll on negative contact bars e, inclined towards one another to ensure an even deposit. Notched shields h are provided to prevent excessive deposit at the edges. The anodes consist of zinc sheets f, fixed inside a wooden frame g. The frame g and shields h are perforated to allow access of electrolyte and escape of gas. Two frames are mounted one above the other between standards b, b<1>, Fig. 1, connected by stays b<2>, b<3>, in a vat a. The band c passes over sprocket wheels c<5>, c<6>, c<7>, c<8> the first of which is connected by a belt c<10> with a wheel c<11> on a power-driven shaft c<3>. The wheel c<5> is supported by a lever c<13> the opposite end of which is connected to the stay b<2> by a link c<15> which may be adjusted to vary the tension of the band c. The shaft c<3> is also adjustable. The mandrels are maintained in engagement with the band in the vertical part of its travel by guides b<5>; b<6>. The standards b, b<1> may be hollow and provided with apertures engaging end apertures in the frames g for removal of gas. The contact bars e of each frame are connected to the negative terminal by conductors e<5>, e<7>. The band c may be formed of links each consisting of a metal rod bent to form lugs c<2>, Fig. 14, the reels d<2> being placed between successive pairs of lugs. To remove the deposited article, the mandrel is held stationary between a pair of spring-pressed rotating jaws; the frictional heat expands the article and allows the mandrel to be withdrawn. The removal device shown in Fig. 10 consists of a cylinder l mounted on a hollow shaft j<7> and closed at one end by a plate i' having an aperture through which the mandrel d is inserted. The jaws i are actuated through levers j<2> and a toggle j<4> by a spring-controlled rod j<6>. To allow insertion of the mandrel the rod is moved against the action of the spring by a footactuated lever, the jaws flying apart by centrifugal force. The jaws may cover the whole of the mandrel or the mandrel may be moved longitudinally so that the whole is heated. The mandrels may be slightly conical.
