Abstract

180,778. Carter, M. J. D. March 10, 1921. Stencils.-A stencil sheet for use on rotary duplicators is prepared from a sheet of dental or Yoshino paper by means of a process substantially the same as that already known in connection with the production of stencils from other kinds of paper. The sheet is first coated with a varnish preferably consisting of resin dissolved in acetone, or in methylated spirits, or in heated turpentine to which methylated spirits is added, the resultant varnish being of approximately 1.240 specific gravity. Other gums may be added to the varnish such as copal, mastic, gamboge, sandarach, or shellac; or the varnished paper may be given a thin coating of gelatine and then calendered. The varnished paper is next written on with an ink consisting of a solution of hydrate of potassium or hydrate ot sodium coloured by some of the soda aniline colours, Chinese blue, or indigo. It is then floated in water written side up, the inked parts turning into a soapy solution which is washed or brushed off under water. Alternatively, if a water ink is used on a duplicator, the inked sheet when dry may be placed directly on the duplicator and a sheet of wet blotting-paper pressed through before feeding the sheets. In attaching the stencil to a duplicator the head paper pieces may be varnished to the sheet and a piece may be attached to the other end to facilitate handling.
