Abstract

179,368. Wilks, G. L. March 5, 1921. Endless-band tool apparatus. - Machines for finishing leather are provided with an unyielding bed of greater length than width and convexly curved longitudinally and transversely so that the hide. fits naturally therein, and while being fed over the bed is acted upon by devices for brushing, striking, and the like. The bed is formed by pairs of rollers c, c<1> which serve to support and feed the hide, the rollers of each pair being connected end to end by a universal joint d. The rollers taper from the centre to each end, and those of each pair are inclined upwardly from their outer ends. The finishing-means consist of brushes u and slate strikers u<1> which are carried on endless bands t, t<1> travelling on pairs of pulleys t<2>, f<3>, and arranged one above each line of rollers so that the bands travel from the centre of the machine in opposite directions to the outer ends of the rollers. The necessarv tension of the bands is obtained by means of spring-pressed rollers u<2>. The inner ends of the bands are supported through the medium of the respective pulleys in frames v, v<1> which are pivoted on the shafts m, t<4> of the other two pulleys, so that the brushes and strikers can be lifted away from the rollers when a piece of leather is to be inserted. The frames are supported in position by rollers v<2> resting on the rollers c, c<1>. The frames are raised by means of treadle-levers w, w<1> which are arranged in pairs, one on each side of the machine, and are connected to the outer ends of the frames by cords or the like x. The treadles are held depressed by catches y engaging pins on the treadle-levers, the catches being released by depression of arms y<2> thereon. The rollers c, c<1> and bands t, t<1> are driven simultaneously from the shaft g, and open and crossed belts and a movable clutch-member are provided for reversing the drive. Tables z for supporting the hides are provided on each side of the machine.
