Abstract

179,325. Williams, D. H. Feb. 9, 1921. Buoyancy motors comprise float a, b, c, d, the floats c, a being connected to the floats b, d respectively by cables passing around control wheels A, which are operated from a motor V when it is desired to change a float from the collapsed to the expanded state or vice versa, or to alter the degree of expansion. Air is allowed to enter or escape from the floats through flexible conduits G connected to winding-drums H. The floats c, b are also connected to the floats a, d respectively, and the floats b, d are connected to cables S<2>, S<3> passing to windlasses S. Clutch mechanism controlled by a lever R is provided so that as one windlass is rotated by the unwinding of its cable and thereby drives a main shaft T, the other windlass is reversed to coil its cable. The lever R is operated through cables P from a spring-controlled lever M, and clutch connections between the motor V and control wheels A are operated from a spring-controlled arm K, the lever M and arm K being operated from rods moved by a float. The position of the arm K may also be determined by connections with a governor Y on the shaft T and a hand regulator Z.
