Abstract

178,595. Stewart, W. A. Jan. 31, 1921. Potato diggers and harvesters; crops, root, digging and topping machines for.-A machine for harvesting potatoes, onions, turnips, &c. comprises a lifting-share, an endless conveyer, parallel troughs on opposite sides of the conveyer, endless carriers in the troughs, receptacles to receive the crop from the carriers, and platforms for attendants who sort the crop by hand into the troughs. Brushes and topping-knives may be provided, and sorting-drums for separating the largest potatoes &c. The machine is mounted on front and rear wheels which mav be driven from a motor. It is also provided with castor wheels 23<1> and with discs, shares, or coulters 15 to loosen the soil. The front end of the endless conveyer 13 is inclined upwardly from the lifting-share 14. The side platforms 16 are connected together by a rear platform 24. and a canopy 23<11> is provided. The endless carriers 19 in the shoots 17 convey the sorted crop to receptacles 18. Brushes 22 and topping-knives 23 are mounted where shown. Sorting-drums 27 pick up the largest specimens and deliver them to hoppers or shoots 29 each leading to one of the troughs 17. The drums 27 are provided with lifting baskets or cups 28 consisting of transversely spaced curved figures.
