Abstract

Fei. 19, 1921. force - transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear.-In means for automatically adjusting the effective length of a cable or cables in the actuating-connections of vehicle brakes the end of each cable is secured to a sleeve splined upon the rock-shaft and screwing into a second sleeve or union having ratchet teeth engaged by a pawl which takes up a tooth if the oscillation of the shaft in applying the brakes exceeds the normal amount. The pair of cables 6, connected respectively to the brakes of a pair of wheels, pass over arms 2, 3 and pulleys 7 secured to the rock-shaft 1 and are attached to sleeves 11, 12 splined on the shaft and screwing into a, union 13 having ratchet teeth 14 engaged bv a pawl 15 mounted upon a fixed member. If the angular movement of che operating-lever 4 in applying the brakes is greater than that corresponding to the pitch of the teeth 14, the pawl 15 slips a tooth and upon the return movement the union 13 is rotated and the sleeves are thereby traversed along the shaft to shorten the effective length of the cables. As the sleeves 11, 12, 13 are free to slide axially on the shaft 1, the tension in the two cables is equalized in applying the brakes.
