Abstract

176,433. Howard, T., and Slade, A. J., Harris, S., and Orris, A. Nov. 2, 1920. Portable wheeled ladder escapes. - A portable electrically-operated fire-escape consists of a collapsable telescopic tower pivotally mounted on a turntable on a motor vehicle, and provided with an endless-chain conveyer, which is also adapted both to act as a ladder and to effect the extension of the tower through the medium of a sliding cross-head on the lowest section and rope-andpulley gear. The turntable 2 is operated from crank-handles 8 by means of a drum and cable 3, and carries a slidable rectangular frame 9 having braces 10 adapted to be lowered into engagement with the ground to steady the structure. The lower tower section is trunnioned at 45 on the frame 9, and is tilted by means of a pair of swing- ing arms or cranes 32, pivoted at 33, and a pair of endless chains 39, which are operated by an electric motor 36 and are connected by a crossbar 41 to the lower tower section, a ratchet device being provided at 42. The telescopic tower comprises interengaging channel members provided with roller bearings, each section being provided with lateral members and tie-rods, folding platforms, and folding gangways. The lowest section of the tower is provided with a cross-head 52, Fig. 7, which slides downwards in guides 53 to effect the extension of the telescopic sections through rope-and-pulley gear. The cross-head 52 is operated from motors 47 through a shaft 50 and a pair of endless chains 73, chain sprocket wheels 57 being locked during this operation by a clutch 60. The cross-head 52 is locked in its lowest position by a bolt 62. By disconnecting the clutch 60, the chains 73, which are connected by cross-rods or rungs, can be used as an endless conveyer, persons or goods being lowered in bags 75, Fig. 2, which are hooked to the rungs and are automatically released on reaching an inclined guideway 77. The endless conveyer acts as a ladder for the ascent of firemen, and ladders may also be connected to the tower sections. The tower may carry flexible hose and nozzles.
