Abstract

176,411. Turton, W. Sept. 24, 1920. Barrel apparatus ; electrolytes; circulating ; electrodes; connections.-Electrolyte is circulated to and from a plating barrel by a hollow axle, the circulation being independent of the rotation of the barrel. In the apparatus shown the axle g is stopped in the middle at g<2> and is provided on either side of the stop with reducing parts having sets of perforations g<5>, g<6>. A sleeve h, to which the barrel is secured, is mounted to rotate on the axle g, and is surrounded by an insulating sleeve q, both sleeves having perforations opposite those of the axle; the sleeve h is driven by a pulley y- The barrel comprises ends k, l, an outer drum m, and an inner perforated drum n of celluloid or other material, the anodes r being detachably secured between the two drums. The work is introduced into the inner drum through an opening o provided with a plug p. The work is connected to the negative terminal by segmental plates t connected to contacts u<2> on an insulating ring u, which make contact with a brush w in such a way that only the lower plates t with which the work is in contact are connected in circuit. The anodes r may be of elliptical crosssection, the major axes being arranged circumferentially. The ends of the anodes pass through the sides k, l into recesses in which dished plates r' are secured by screws. The dished plates r<3> are closed by plates r<4> secured together with terminals r<6> by nuts r<3> to screw pins r cast into the anodes. The terminals are connected to an insulated ring contact v<2> making contact with a brush x. The axle bearings a - - e are supported by frame members f and brackets f<2>. Specifications 8574/85 and 5265/01 are referred to.
