Abstract
176,183. Drane, M. Dec. 24, 1920. Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-Relates to direction-signal devices for motor vehicles. The indicator member is a casing 10 enclosing an electric lamp 11 and bearing on its front and rear faces the representation of a hand. The casing is carried by a stem 12 which is pivoted to a rod 14. This rod is supported by a double clamp consisting of the members 16, 17 of which the member 16 is secured to the wind-shield frame and the member 17, extending laterally from the member 16, is positioned to engage the rod 14. A tube 20 houses a slidable rod 21 which is provided with a handle 22 projecting through a slot 23 in the tube. The outer end of the rod 21 is screwed into the bar 25 which is slidably mounted in the tube 20 and has its outer end connected by a link 26 to an arm 12a. The rod 21 is operated by the handle 22 which normally rests in the notch 24 and the signal device is swung down into the horizontal position when the rod 21 is moved to the left. A spring 27 is employed for assisting to restore the signal device 10 to the vertical position. The tube 20 is supported by the arm 29 provided for closing the circuit of the lamp 11 through the wire 32 and is automatically controlled by the actuation of the indicator member 10. The tongue 40 is positioned in the path of the handle 22 and when the handle is in the position shown it holds the tongue off the contact 37 so that the lamp circuit is broken. When the handle 22 is operated the tongue 40 completes the lamp circuit through the contact 37. A link 42, which can be swung over to hold the tongue 40 away from the contact 37, is provided in order that the lamp circuit may be broken during the daytimo. Each side of the vehicle is equipped with a signal device and the means for securing the device permits ready adjustment to different widths of cars.
