Testing physical qualities of materials.- Relates to self-adjusting gripping-devices for testing-machines, and consists in providing a lining of material softer than the test-piece, which is to be pressed into close contact therewith to prevent slipping. For soft or smooth test-pieces an auxiliary stretching-device is used which impresses the lining upon the test-piece before load is applied thereto. The test-piece D is held between wedges A having soft linings C which are impressed upon the test-piece as the wedges move outwards against the inclined sides of holders B as the result of the pull applied to the test-piece. If two hook strips E are used to couple the wedges as shown, the effect of the pull is to impress the lining upon the test-piece as the holders B move away from one another. When sufficiently impressed, the linings are kept in place by wedges F, the hook strips removed, and the test proper started.
