Abstract
175,221. Owens, F. W., and Howells, D. J. May 24, 1921. Wind - screens. -In a wind-screen for vehicles comprising upper and lower transparent sections, the upper section is pivoted at its top edge and adapted to be angularly adjusted, while the lower section, to the bottom edge of which is attached an expanding or contracting screen, is arranged to slide in guides behind the upper screen so as to be protected by it. The angular gaps at the sides formed when opening the upper screen are closed by expanding or contracting lattice screens. The upper screen 3, Fig. 4, is angularly adjusted and the lower screen 4 slidden up behind it and locked in position by the spring bolt 14. The gap between the bottom 6 of the lower screen 4 and the dashboard of the car is closed by an expanding or contracting screen 7, which may be of the roller-blind type. The projection 13 forms a cover when the screen 7 is collapsed, and a protection from eddy-currents when the screen is in its raised position. The sides of the screen 3 and the vertical supports of the screen are connected by a lattice screen 19 of fan shape which closes in the angular gap when the screen 3 is open. The pivot 20, Fig. 5, of the upper screen 3, may be adjusted to any angular position by means of the pinion 22<x> on it, engaging with a toothed segment 23 which can be set in any position by means of the spring- actuated pawl 26 engaging in a recess in the casing. The spindle 24 is rigidly attached to the segment 23 and has a screwed end projecting beyond the casing which is fitted with a wing nut capable of maintaining the segment and casing in frictional contact.
