Abstract

Hydraulic pumps.-An hydraulic air and gas compressor comprising a vessel alternately and automatically filled with and emptied of water and air is provided with a float in the lower part of the vessel rigidly connected with a tube having a lateral port and constituting a slide valve for water admission. A water exhaust flap valve is also provided and a piston movable in a vertical cylinder, the lower part of the cylinder being connected with the upper part of the vessel by a tube normally closed bv a flap valve connected with a float in the upper part of the vessel. Spring controlled air-inlet and outlet valves are provided in the upper part of the vessel. The hollow stem 20 of the lower float 21 carries a piston 19 moving in a cylinder 18 which is connected at the bottom by a tube 23 with a neck 6 normally closed by a suction-operable flap valve 7 carried by the stem of an upper float 9. the lifting of which admits the compressed gas to the neck 6 and the cylinder 18. The stem carries also a cup 24 with a packing-disc 25 which closes the outlet from the vessel to a water outlet cylinder 17 when the cup is at the bottom. The cup is also formed with a hollow stem 27 sliding within a water inlet passage 16 and having a lateral port 28 and an opening controlled by a weighted valve 29 at the top. Water thus flows from the passage 16 into the cup and the vessel, immersing the float 21 and continuing to fill the vessel until it reaches and lifts the upper float 9, uncovering the neck 6 and allowing the compressed air &c. to pass to the cylinder 18; the piston 19 is then suddenly lifted therein by the aid of the float 21, and the plunger 27 is raised until the port 28 is moved out of the passage 16, water inflow ceasing and outflow into the cylinder 17 taking place. Air inlet and outlet valves 5, 12 and a pressure gauge are provided.
