Abstract
174,270. Swingler, E. Dec. 3, 1920. Wire fencing, securing to standards; fencing- posts. - Relates to a method of erecting wire fencing, to the construction of posts therefor, and to a method of jointing free ends of the wires within the posts. Metallic ferrules 1, Fig. 1, are cast within concrete posts at suitable points to take the wires 2, which are drawn taut at each post or over a number of posts, and wedges 3 driven into the ferrules to grip the wires. A joint at a post is effected by means of a wedge 3, Fig. 14, holding the two overlapping ends of the wire 1, 12 together. Turning of the fencing is carried out by means of a corner post with two sets of ferrules at right-angles. In the application of the invention to wooden posts, borings are made in each side of the post, one 8, Fig. 7, to take the ferrule and the other 9 through which to thread the wire; the wedge 10 has longitudinal ribs 11 which bite into the material of the post and prevent turning. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the ferrule shown in Fig. 7. The metal lining may be tapered so that the wedge is inclined out of the line of the wire, providing an additional grip; or a cylindrical sleeve hammered out at one end to provide an elongated shape may be used.
