Abstract
174,107. White, A. E., (Forbes Tubular Products Corporation). Aug. 17, 1920. Tubes.-Helically coiled seamed tubes for ash cans, barrels, kegs, salamanders, &c. are made by bending the edges of a metal strip, passing the strip through a ring to coil the strip into tubular form, and pressing the edges together so as to complete the seam. The strip is passed through a guide 27 to a pair of rolls 7, 8, Fig. 4, which bend up one edge at right-angles and form a channel 49 with a downwarly extending portion at the other edge, is then passed through a pair of vertical rolls 10, 11, Fig. 6, which bend the projecting edges to an acute angle and is then passed through a guide 28 and a pair of rolls 16, 17 to a circular body 20 which bends it into tubular form, the body being provided with a guide 25 and rolls 26. It then passes under the bevelled portion 28<1> of the guide 28 and passes again between the rolls 16, 17 so that the seam is partly flattened in a groove 51, Fig. 7, and is finally flattened by a shallow groove 52. The tube is supported after leaving the machine by a pair of rollers 53 mounted in a framework supported by standards 55. The forward end may be sheared off square or the strip initially shaped to provide a square end. The body 20 is provided with a rib 21, Fig. 10, spaced from a removable ring 22 which has an inclined edge to give a helical set to the strip, one or more guides 23 curved at 24 being provided to hold the strip on the body against the ring. Rolls 13, 14 may be provided to assist the forming rolls 7, 8 to feed the strip through the machine. The rolls 7, 8, 13, 14, 16, 17 are driven by a train of spur gear from a shaft 29, which is driven by a belt and has a belt shifting gear or a clutch operated by a hand lever 44. A handle 42 may also be provided on the shaft 29 for rotating the shaft slightly in either direction. The rolls 7, 8, 13, 14, 16, 17 are adjustable according to the thickness of the strip and the rolls 10, 11 according to the width of the strip, the roll 16 being journalled in boxes carried in a yoke 46 provided with adjusting screws.
