173,155. Noble, E. Dec. 7, 1920. Machine cutters, grinding in situ.-A. tool for sharpening guillotine-machine and like knives comprises a base a having pivoted thereto, between ears d, a clamp h. This clamp comprises jaws h<1>, h<2> between which is held an oil stone, or carborundum, or other abrasive block i; the block may comprise two parts i<1>, i<2> of different grain. The block is adjusted about its pivots g by means of a link n which is pivoted at o to a projection m of the clamp and has a slot p therein. The slot engages a bolt s carried by a member q pivoted at r to lugs e on the base, and the block is secured in the adjusted position by a nut u screwing on the bolt. On the base are projections f which are gripped by the hands of the operator, and secured beneath the base is a wooden piece presenting a plane surface c which rests on the table of the machine. In operation, the block i is adjusted to an angle to suit the bevel of the knife, and the tool is then moved over the surface of the table with the block in contact with the blade, as shown in Fig. 4. The block is then adjusted to make a right-angle with the table, and the flat side of the blade is ground to remove burrs, the base remaining on the same side of the blade during both operations. In modifications, the block may be held in the adjusted position by a nut or screw on the pivot g, or by a curved slot and a screw; the wooden piece may be omitted from the base, and the base may be so shaped as to prevent the block from being rotated, in one direction, beyond a position at right-angles to the table.
