Abstract

172,830. Prestage, E. Oct. 25, 1920. Sterilizing milk.-Apparatus for sterilizing milk by the " holding " method in which the milk previously heated flows through vessels designed to maintain it at a high temperature for a definitetime, the vessels are formed as tanks divided by partitions which serve as baffles to mix the milk and ensure that none 'shall remain stagnant in any portion of the tanks. The tanks 2 are mounted on trunnions in uprights 1 so that they can readily be turned over for cleaning when the connecting pipes 8 are removed. The partitions. are so arranged that the passages widen slightly in the direction of the flow of the milk and are provided with openings 7 through which the milk passes. The outlet pipes 9 are provide'd with openings near their upper ends and surrounded by sleeves 10 extending above these openings and formed with a number of small perforations 11 so that the milk flows into them from several levels n the tank.
