Electromagnetic switches.-The switch is normally closed, and the moving contact 12 is brought with a wiping movement from its normal position, Fig. 1, to the open position, Fig. 2, by the engagement of a pin 19 in the split end of the core 18, with a lever 13 when the electromagnet 17 is energized. The spring 23 is compressed during the movement, and on the corebeing released the arm 20 and spring act to turn the lever arm 13 counterclockwise, closing movement being completed before the core has reached its lowest position, so that its rebound will not bring the pin 19 in contact with the arm. The position of the contact 11 with respect to the winding 17 is such that the arc formed when the contacts separate is quickly extinguished by the flux of the winding.
