Abstract
172,489. Grossi, S. Oct. 28, 1920. Race games, mechanical.-Relates to race game apparatus of the kind wherein competing players rotate handles attached to operating spindles to move model figures along tracks or up poles under the control of centrifugal devices which disconnect the driving mechanism at a critical speed. According to the invention each centrifugal device comprises a single arm pivoted to the operating spindle and having its lower end normally in driving engagement with the usual winding bobbin whereby, if the critical speed is exceeded, the pivoted arm disengages itself by centrifugal action from the bobbin. The winning figure deflects a catch, thus allowing an electric switch to close and illuminate the corresponding lamp. The attendant, by operating a hand-lever attached to an horizontal bar carried after the manner of a parallel ruler, may raise or lower the winding bobbing into or out of driving engagement with the pivoted arms. In the form known in Figs. 1 and 2, monkey figures are drawn up poles 2 by means of cords passing from winding drums 4 over the tops of the poles. The winding drums are loose on the operating spindles 5 but are caused to rotate, when the handles 6 are turned, by means of pivoted arms 11 which engage projections 12 on the drums. If a handle is turned too quickly, the corresponding arm 11 moves out of engagement with the winding drum and the monkey descends until the speed is reduced. On reaching the top of the pole the monkey displaces a catch 32 and allows electric contacts 26, 27 to close and illuminate a lamp. The winding bobbins 4 may be raised or lowered to place them simultaneously in or out of driving reach of the arms 11 by means of a bar 15 supported on links 16 and operated by a hand-lever 21. In a modification, the bar 15 may be operated by a solenoid when the winning monkey closes the electric contacts 26, 27, thus causing the descent of all the monkeys and the illumination of the winner's lamp.
