Abstract

Courses, determining. - Relates to an instrument for ascertaining the correct course of ships by taking at equal intervals three compass bearings of a distant object; the instrument may also be used by a stationery observer to determine the course of uniformly-moving vessels. The instrument, upon which the bearings taken are set for calculating the course, comprises a base a having a rotatable rim b divided like a compass card. An arrow-head A upon the base is set to the second compass bearing and the respective differences between this bearing and the other two are set by arms w, x pivoted upon a quadrant r, which is provided with a scale for setting the arms and is mounted upon guideways so as to be capable of sliding along the diameter of the base passing through the arrow A. A pivoted pointer c, f is set to indicate on the rim b the required course by sliding the quadrant r upon the base a until the arms w, x come into contact with a centrallydisposed vertical plate k mounted on the disc g. carrying the pointer e, f. An arrow-head B is. used in the case of a stationary observer for setting the second bearing.
