Integral calks and treads; composite shoes; making by special methods.-Sticks, lengths, or other members of carborundum are combined in the metal of a horseshoe to form a durable wearing-surface. In the form shown, sticks a, Fig. 1, of carborundum are combined in the metal bar b from which the shoe is made, the sticks being parallel to the length of the bar, either by casting metal, such as iron, around the sticks a and afterwards heating and rolling, preferably until the carborundum is flush with the surface of the metal, or by arranging the carborundum sticks a between grooved metal bars c, Fig. 3, and afterwards heating the whole to a red heat and rolling to form the combined bar. The carborundum may also be combined with the metal during the process of casting the metal to the form of a horseshoe.
