Abstract

170,120. Holroyd & Co., Ltd., J., and Kinsey, R. July 20, 1920. Dividing-engines.-Relates to a machine for marking graduations on cylindrical, conical, or flat surfaces, Figs. 1 and 5 showing the machine adapted for graduating cylindrical surfaces. The marking-tool d is carried by a slide c which can be reciprocated along the bed b of the machine by a lever e pivoted to the slide. Towards its rear end the slide carries a pawl l engaging a ratchet-wheel h secured to a shaft g mounted in the bed b. The shaft g also carries a disc i having radial recesses k of varying depths. An adjustable stop m carried by the slide c co-operates with the disc i to define the stroke of the tool, a longer stroke being obtained when the stop can enter one of the recesses k. The work o<1> is supported by a mandrel o on the spindle n, which carries a wormwheel r gearing with a worm q. The wormspindle p is rotated by turning a lever u secured to a shaft s, the shafts s, p being connected by a change-gear y, z, q. The wheel y can be displaced by a lever 6 so as either to engage the wheel 2 directly or to engage the wheel z through an idler 3. The lever u is radially adjustable, and has at its outer end a spring plunger w adapted to engage in holes x arranged in series of varying radii around a fixed plate t. The angle of rotation of the lever u, and hence of the work o<1>, at each operation is thus defined. For marking conical surfaces, the tool slide is pivoted to the bed and can be fixed at the desired angle. For marking flat surfaces, the work is carried on a leading-screw which is operated by worm gear as above described.
