In a counter-current process for the extraction of oils &c. from crushed seed or other vegetable matter by means of volatile solvent and in which solvent is expressed from the mass after each immersion, the meal from a pipe a is conveyed through a jacketed conduit b and falls on to a preferably inclined screen h<1> in a tank g<1> so that its progress is retarded while it mixes with used solvent from pipe j<1>. The meal is then conveyed to wring- ing-rollers t<1> through a conduit m<1> having its bottom perforated from above the level of the pipe j<1> so that drained or expressed solvent runs down an outer conduit q<1> to the tank g<1> but below the screen h<1>. The pressed meal falls down a conduit f<2> and is passed through a series of similar tanks, conduits, and rollers to a perforated conduit x in which it is freed from solvent by steam or vapour from a pipe 5<a> in the lower half of a divided jacket 4, the vapours being drawn off to a condenser through pipes 5. Pure solvent is fed from the tank v to the last tank g<4> by a valve u and pipe j<4> and through the series by pipes k<4> and j<1> to the last outlet pipe k<1>, which leads to a solvent-recovery apparatus. The recovered solvent is returned to the tank v by a pipe w. Solvent vapour in the tank g<1> or pipe f<1> is drawn to the recovery apparatus through pipe e.
