Abstract

169,290. Vedder, D. G. June 24, 1920. Wells.-Water is shut out of oil and like wells by freezing the water in the area between the water-bearing stratum and the oil &c. bearing stratum and externally of the well casing. After sinking the well it is filled with mud and a casing 46 is lowered therein, the casing having a perforated lower end within which is a short perforated casing 52; the inner casing, is secured at its upper end to the outer casing by a bellshaped fitting 50 and between the casings is a cement &c. barrier 48. A plug 60 of wood, rubber, cement, &c. is then lowered and driven into the inner casing 52 and the mud above the plug is removed. An inner casing 49 is then lowered and connected by threading to the first inner casing 52 ; a freezing-coil 53 is also lowered. A non-freezing solution, such as calcium-chloride solution, is poured in between the casings 49, 46, and the coil 53 is connected to a refrigerating plant 54; the mud outside the casing 46, between the water zone 43 and oil zone 45 is then frozen. The plug 60 is then drilled out and pump tubing is lowered within the inner casing, a plug near the foot of the pump tubing keeping the space between the pump tubing and inner casing free from oil, so leaving an air jacket which prevents freezing of the oil in the pump tubing, or a vacuum may be formed in this space and also above the non-freezing solution. The freezing-process is continued during pumping. The outer casing 46 may be lowered during the drilling of the well; then after completion of the drilling, the short inner casing 52, with its plug 60, bell fitting 50, and an annular external plate above its perforations, is lowered into position and cement is forced through a, pipe penetrating the fitting 50 to form the barrier 48 above the annular external plate. The mud above the barrier is then removed, and the casing 49 &c. applied as before. A frozen shut-off device may also be employed where a water zone is found below an oil zone or between two oil zones.
