Abstract
168,590. Coble, L. G. Sept. 3, 1920, [Convention date]. Teeth, artificial.-Comprises means for detachably clamping upper and lower dentures to the jaws of the articulator and means whereby the upper clamp may be adjustably secured to the upper jaw of the instrument. The articulator comprises a base 10 grooved horizontally to receive the lower jaw 15 which is secured by a screw 16, and grooved vertically to receive a tongue 11 projecting from a yoke 12 and adjustably secured by a clamp screw 13. The yoke 12 is formed with lateral arms 21 upturned at 22 to receive pivots 23 extending into inclined slots 25 in a frame 26. A hook 28 carried by the yoke 12 carries a tension member 29 connected through a spring 30 to the frame 26 so that the frame 26 may be manipulated by finger-pieces 34 to cause the frame to ride on the pivots 23, thus giving a side-to-side masticating movement. The upper jaw 32 is slidably connected to the frame 26 and is secured by a screw 38, the lower end of which is engaged by the adjustable stop 40. The lower denture is secured between lugs 57 and an adjustable screw 58 carried by a plate 50 engaging the lower jaw 15 of the instrument by means of hooks 51. The upper denture is secured by a pivotal clamp 63, 64 formed with a stem 71 having a ball end 70. A similar ball. 61 is carried by a plate 55 detachably secured to the upper jaw 32 of the instrument by hooks 51. The balls 61, 70 are each engaged by recessed members 74, 75 secured together by one or more screws 79 so as to form a double ball-and-socket joint. Universal adjustment is thus provided for the upper denture and both dentures may readily be detached from the articulator for trial in the mouth without disturbing the adjustments of the instrument. In using the appliance the lower denture is secured in place, a bite is then inserted over it and .the upper denture held in the clamp 63, 64 is adjusted in position to register correctly with the bite. The bite is then removed and occlusion perfected in the usual way by grinding.
