Abstract

168,142. Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd., and Pugh, J. V. May 21, 1920. Detaching from, and attaching to, permanent hubs. - Relates to means for transmitting the drive between pairs of rotating members, such as shafts and wheels, of the kind in which the two members . have engaging tapered polygonal surfaces, and consists in the formation of such surfaces of an odd number of equal sides in excess of four similarly arranged round the axis of rotation with the object of ensuring contact between at least three pairs of sides simultaneously and avoiding looseness between the members due to inaccurate fiting. The invention is described in its application to the mounting of detachable wheels on permanent hubs. In Fig. 3, the permanent hub a and detachable wheel hub b are shown in section, and of the form of a regular heptagon. As no two pairs of faces are parallel, and the hub members are tapered longitudinally, the act of forcing one member over the other will draw at least three pairs of faces into contact at r, r<1>, r<2> and connect the members rigidly together even if clearances exist between the other pairs of faces as at r<3>, r<4>, r<5>, r<6>. Figs. 9 and 10 show the application to driving connections of the kind described in Specification 165,490 in which two sets of driving surfaces l, k are spaced axially of the members and communicate the drive in opposite directions. The driving surfaces are regular polygons with an odd number of sides, and, while the polygonal formations are symmetrical on one surface, those on the other surface are slightly displaced angularly as shown in Fig 9. With this arrangement, as the two members are moved axially relatively to one another, they are also moved angularly, and contact occurs at, at least, three points as t, t<1>, t<2> of the surfaces k, and at least three points as v, v<1>, v<2> of the surfaces l, the clearances at other points as t<3>, t<4>, t<5>, t<6>, v<3>, v<4>, v<5>, v<6> having no effect on the rigidity of the driving connection in either direction.
