Abstract

166,780. Robinson, J., and Smith, R. T. May 21, 1920. Directive signalling.-In directional receiving- sets, as used on aeroplanes &c., the variable error due to re-radiation from the metallic structure of the craft is subdued or eliminated bv means of a correcting-coil, which is arranged so that its effect is adjustable and which is placed either in series or in parallel with, or is coupled to, the directional coil or coils. The usual error is quadrantal, as shown in Fig. 1, or semicircular as in Fig. 2. Figs. 7 and 8 show an arrangement for correcting quadrantal error. The correcting-coil 13 is geared bv a crossed drive 16 so as to rotate at the same rate but in the opposite direction to the main and auxiliary directional aerials 11, 12. As shown in Fig. 8, it is in series with the auxiliary coil 12, its effect thereon being controlled by an adjustable shunt or inductance 18. The correcting effect will be zero in the fore-and-aft directions, and at right-angles thereto; whilst it will be a maximum at intermediate points, i.e. at 45‹, as required by the quadrantal-error graph, Fig. 1. For the type of error indicated in Fig. 2, the correcting-coil is fixed, and set in the plane of maximum error, so as to apply a maximum correction in the positions corresponding to an angular displacement of 90‹ and 270‹ respectively.
